Confrontations. Experimental Dutch and German Literature of the Long Sixties
Brussels, 8-9 September 2015
The conference Confrontations explores the manifold relationships between neo-avant-garde literature in Dutch and in German, adjacent literatures with a distinct identity when it comes to the rise of the neo-avant-garde. Experimental authors from these countries explored similar stylistic, narrative, and intermedial techniques (e.g., montage in fiction, visual procedures in poetry, jazz-like improvisation in poetry and prose) and faced similar ideological challenges (e.g., the attraction of radical leftist thought) and institutional struggles (e.g., with regard to publication strategies). The papers presented at the conference offer a representative view of the Dutch and German literary neo-avant-garde, but also seek to shed new light on the oeuvres of the selected corpus precisely by confronting each Dutch-speaking writer with a German-speaking writer. On a methodological level, the conference goes beyond traditional national philological views and beyond the concept of influence. The papers do not aim to map influences and intertextual relations, but to ‘confront’ authors, i.e. to discuss revealing and meaningful similarities as well as differences. The comparison will highlight, for the first time, the affinities between literary neo-avant-gardes in the Dutch and in the German language.

In 2014 werd een voorbereidende vergadering gehouden in Leuven:
Confrontaties: OLITH-SEL workshop 5/12/2014
Tot nu toe is de Nederlandstalig experimentele literatuur vooral in verband gebracht met de Franse nouveau roman of het Franse surrealisme. Uit zowel kritieken als romans van de jaren zestig en zeventig blijkt echter dat proza en poëzie uit het Duitse taalgebied, in het bijzonder Oostenrijk en Duitsland, een minstens even grote impact had op Vlaanderen en Nederland. Om deze relatie bloot te leggen zonder een beroep te moeten doen op het concept invloed, confronteren wij een Nederlandstalige met een Duitstalige auteur die op het vlak van poëtica, stijl, narratieve procedés en dergelijke een belangrijke affiniteit met elkaar vertonen. Voor elk van de hieronder genoemde auteurs wordt een specialist aangesproken uit respectievelijk het Nederlandse of Duitse vakgebied. Als voorbereiding op een congres op 9 september 2015 waarin deze confrontaties plaatsvinden, wordt er op 5 december 2014 een workshop gehouden.
